MISAC Looks Back at Accomplishments and Looks Ahead Toward Goals

In 2018, MISAC’s state board, committees, volunteers, staff and consultants experienced a year of positive growth, learning and opportunity.

Under the leadership of Tim Ranstrom, the MISAC Communications Committee knocked it out of the park with member and prospective member communications. MISAC increased its social media presence on Facebook and LinkedIn and did an outstanding job with the quarterly President’s Message and MISAC Newsletter. The Committee also produced two creative videos that were highlighted at the 2018 Annual Conference. The first provides an overview of MISAC's origin and history through the eyes of some of the organization's most-established members: MISAC pioneers. The second is an energetic, externally facing message that targets prospective members. Both are available for viewing on MISAC's Facebook page.

Through a partnership with MultiView, MISAC now produces MISAC Matters, a weekly newsletter that covers topics that are relevant to the IT profession.

2018 also saw growth in the number of volunteer committees. MISAC established a Policies and Procedures Committee, headed up by Ken Desforges, that is tasked with compiling all of MISAC’s policies and procedures to complete the newly established MISAC Policies & Procedures Manual.

Guarav Garg and Bryon Horn spearhead the Smart Communities Committee, which began researching information that will assist our member cities and special districts in developing policies and programs that will help our communities become “smarter” communities.

MISAC also started preparing the next generation of IT leaders in local government through the establishment of the Mentoring Committee, headed up by Jeff Lewis.

MISAC was fortunate enough to expand its footprint in the local government space through speaking engagements and presentations at League of California Cities and California Special Districts Association events. The Outreach Committee is continuing to do a fantastic job of seeking presentation opportunities before other organizations, associations and conferences.

Early in 2018, the MISAC State Board proposed an amendment to the bylaws establishing a new “Agency Membership” category that would allow MISAC to put a cap on the amount of dues any member agency would have to pay; by paying that cap, the member agency could have unlimited “Associate Memberships” so long as the members worked in IT. The amendment passed and at the start of the new membership year, MISAC began accepting “Agency Memberships.” This small change in the bylaws led to a significant growth in membership, from 700 members to 1,000. Joyce Starosiciak, Albert Plimpton and members of the “Agency Membership” Task Force did an incredible job spearheading this initiative.

Looking ahead to 2019, MISAC hopes to continue growing its member attendance at the Annual Conference, which will be held at the Portola Hotel in Monterey. There will also be an additional focus on expanding educational opportunities for members through MISAC’s MuniTech Academy.

Volunteer engagement will also be a priority. With the expansion of MISAC’s active committees, a focus will turn towards recruiting those interested in donating their time and talent to ensure that MISAC’s committees are meeting the needs of members and the communities in which they serve.

Hong Sae has done a fantastic job leading our Legislative Committee, and as a new legislative session begins under a new administration, MISAC hopes to make an even greater impact under the dome.

2019 will be a busy year! Watch for more information about new initiatives, programs and opportunities in which you can get involved in upcoming issues of the quarterly newsletter and MISAC Matters.
