MISAC to Significantly Upgrade Listserv

At their April 30th meeting, the MISAC Board of Directors voted unanimously to replace the aging and dated listserv platform with a much more robust, flexible, functional and modern community-based program. The upcoming change came as a result of nearly a year of study by the association’s Communications Committee.

The new platform, powered by Higher Logic, will allow MISAC members to choose how they would like to participate in MISAC-related, member-to-member correspondence.  The Higher Logic platform will also give MISAC members the ability to create, search, and contribute to persistent topic threads. The threads will reside within private, secure communities designed to drive interactions, knowledge sharing, and engagement among members. The online community is a flexible, scalable SaaS-based platform that will be seamlessly integrated with MISAC’s current online database, Your Membership (YM).

“We are confident MISAC members, since we are all techies anyway, are going to absolutely love this new platform,” MISAC President Tim Williamsen (City of Petaluma) stated upon announcing the Board’s decision to invest in “Listserv 3.0.” “The Communications Committee, chaired by Tim Ranstrom from El Dorado Irrigation District, is to be commended for coming up with a phenomenal solution to modernize our number one member benefit,” Williamsen added.

When presenting the proposal to move forward with the upgraded platform, Ranstrom explained how the new “listserv” will work. “Once implemented, members will have choices as to what types and frequency of ‘listserv’ posts they want to receive via email, and with the YM integration, takes no more than one-click to access a topic of interest directly from the email message” Ranstrom noted.

MISAC Executive Director Brad Walker noted that both the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the California Society of Association Executives (Cal-SAE) use the Higher Logic solution. “It’s great! I have chosen to receive my notifications once each day so every morning I receive one email from each of the communities to which I belong along with digest versions of each of the threads from that community.” Walker noted that he belongs to three Cal-SAE communities:

·  The Member Community which is open to all members and to which nearly all members participate (akin to the current MISAC listserv).

·  The Capital Region Community which is geographically based (i.e., chapters)

·  The CEO/Executive Director Community which is job based and restricted to only association Executive Directors and CEOs.

“We anticipate it taking a couple of months to get ramped up and fully functional,” Ranstrom noted. “Several Committee members will be working with Higher Logic on the implementation process and determining the communities we want to start with and how best we integrate with YM,” he added. “Considering the profession we all work in, I do not anticipate a steep learning curve for our members,” he added.
