With the cancellation of the 2020 MISAC Annual Conference originally scheduled for September 27-30 in Rancho Mirage, MISAC members can look forward to a bevy of virtual education and training opportunities for the foreseeable future. Following are some of the new methods MISAC volunteers and staff are working on for the upcoming year.

MISAC Strategic Partner Case Study Training Sessions – The MISAC Education Committee, under the leadership of Bryon Horn (City of Fresno), will be working with the MISAC Strategic Partners, MISAC members, and staff on presentations akin to those that would have been offered during the breakout sessions during the conference. As one of their new benefits, replacing those that were lost due to the cancellation, Strategic Partners have been invited to pair up with MISAC members and/or other government IT professionals who have used their product or service to present at least one successful collaborative, case study solution for MISAC members to consider.

Certification Trainings – Also under the leadership of the Education Committee, MISAC will be working with professional training organizations to present certification programs. At press time, MISAC staff was finalizing details for a week-long virtual Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) training opportunity to be offered in the very near future.

According to Horn, “MISAC President Helen Hall has asked that we put an emphasis on training this year and the Board approved a budget to allow us to offer some of these courses at greatly reduced rates. It looks like we will be able to offer the CCSP class for under $2,000 per member which is a phenomenal price.”

Additional certification programs are in the works for later in the year.

Lunch & Learn – MISAC Lunch & Learn sessions are expected to take a variety of forms with the emphasis of all being participant interaction. MISAC members will be invited to participate in roundtable discussions, traditional presentations, workshops, seminars and more. These sessions are free to members and will take place during the lunch hour.

Partner Webinars – Also as part of their benefit package, MISAC Strategic Partners will be offering a limited number of periodic webinars of their choosing. If past offerings are any indication, MISAC members will be given a great opportunity to learn more about a variety of subjects during these free webinars. MISAC’s primary responsibility for the Partner webinars is to market them to members and work to make sure they are spaced out appropriately. During the MISAC Strategic Partnership year (July 1 – June 30), Platinum Partners can offer three of these and Gold Partners one.

In the Works – Other opportunities are in the works including some one-day hybrid (live and virtual) events coordinated with MISAC’s three regional chapters. “We will be working closely with our Platinum Strategic Partners on these as they come to fruition,” MISAC Executive Director Brad Walker noted.

Also in the works are some virtual social events. MISAC members will be notified as those plans are finalized.
