This October marks the 12th Annual Cyber Security Awareness Month sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center. As municipal information technology professionals, MISAC members should use this as an opportunity to audit their own information systems security and also to engage their community to further the cyber security message.  Cyber Security Awareness month presents a unique opportunity for the IT Departments to be seen as leaders within their organizations, as well as within their communities.

Inside City Hall

While security may be at the forefront of the IT Department’s mind 365 days a year, Cyber Security Awareness Month serves as a catalyst to remind every member of the organization about simple steps to take to enhance security and prevent attack. The Department of Homeland Security has produced a variety of resources including their Government Tip Card. By taking this opportunity to remind every member of the organization that cyber security is a team effort, future security breaches may be avoided.

A large library of resources for government agencies is available from the Department of Homeland Security. Access these by clicking here

In the Community

Cyber Security Awareness Month sets the stage for public engagement, giving a City’s IT Department a chance to shine in the community. From school outreach to senior education, the opportunities are endless. Why not engage the local chamber of commerce to host a cyber security workshop for the business community? Or host an Internet security 101 class at the Senior Center? For little more than the cost of staff resources, the City has a great reason to engage the public and provide a valuable service.

There are many unique ways cities can celebrate Cyber Security Awareness month. Whatever direction a City takes, the Department of Homeland Security Stop.Think.Connect Toolkit has resources available for those efforts. Browse the library by clicking here.
